Keith Island (in the Broken Group)

September 17th, 2006

IMG_1004.JPG

This was my first trip to the Broken Group since 2000. I looked forward to going back, because while the area is small enough to paddle through in one day, there are so many islands that there’s always something new to explore. This would also be my first time to Keith Island, a First Nations reserve island located in Pacific Rim National Park. I would also get the chance to paddle a single person kayak again.

I really enjoyed this trip and I’m looking forward to going back in the summer of 2007.

Gulf Islands

May 11th, 2006

Portland Island lunch spot

For this trip we stayed in a B&B instead of a tent. This trip was based on Saltspring Island, one of the Gulf Islands, a collection of large and small islands between Vancouver Island and the Mainland. This island group continues just south of the border into Washington State and is known there as the San Juan Islands.

The Gulf Islands become extremely crowded with boats and tourists in the summertime, so the middle of May is a good time to do this trip — the weather is usually pretty good, the days are reasonably long and there is plenty of solitude on the water, though you do have to dodge the BC Ferries from time to time.

Della Falls (2nd trip)

September 23rd, 2005

Mystery sound rock

I was eager to do this trip and compare it with the one I’d done just two months ago. There were few wildflowers this time, being so late in the season, but the fungi were everywhere. The waterfall level was significantly lower than in July, but it was still flowing. And the weather was still perfect…

Della Falls (1st trip)

July 22nd, 2005

DSC04338

Della Falls is often described as having the highest vertical drop of any waterfall in Canada. It’s not a major waterfall in terms of volume of water, but it’s still a beautiful place for a hike. On this trip, in mid-July, there were wildflowers out everywhere, as well as numerous blueberries and salmonberries. And the weather was perfect…

Queen Charlotte Islands

July 7th, 2002

Hotspring Island

My longest trip so far was an expedition through the Gwaii Haanas National Park in the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii) starting at the south end of the park and finishing near the north end. This was a private trip, not sponsored by Batstar Adventure tours.
This file contains the track logs of the entire trip. It can only be opened with Google Earth.

Expedition to the Midcoast

June 13th, 2001

014438.jpg

A long trip to the midcoast area of British Columbia, north of Vancouver Island.

This would be completely different from the protected waters of the Broken Group: 1) more exposed crossings, 2) longer, and 3) moving camp every couple of days.

First Trip — Broken Group Islands

June 11th, 2000

My introduction to multi-day kayaking and camping. I’d been camping in a tent before, but via car camping only

I didn’t take my camera on the first trip, because it was pretty new at the time and I was worried about getting it wet or sandy. This turned out to be an unnecessary precaution; I’ve not make that mistake since.
